Lawrence Block

“From Viable Fictional Notions, a bureau that provides upwards of a dozen ideas a month to subscribers. If you see one you like, you register it and they take it off the table.

The subscription list, alas, has been closed for some time now, and the waiting list is a long one.”

– Lawrence Block
(from an e-mail)

I was introduced to Lawrence Block by way of Burglars Can’t Be Choosers. The protagonist appealed to me: Bernie Rhodenbarr, bookstore owner by day, gentleman thief by night and reluctant detective when it matters. Had I been introduced to Burglar, a 1987 film adaptation of The Burglar in the Closet, this would be a very different introduction.

Arguably one of best crime writers of today, Lawrence Block’s foray into the literary world started with an apprenticeship in the porn paperback industry. Since then he has published over fifty novels, numerous short stories and won accolades for his work. He is also the only three-time Edgar Award winner for Best Short Story.
